Passage: Deuteronomy 16:1-17

Moses told the people to gather and listen.
First, Moses reminded the people of the times God had rescued them and given them food, water, and shelter. Moses said that God had always been with His people and loved them. God was good to His people.
Moses explained that now the people would have special festivals to praise God and thank Him. Everyone would celebrate and rejoice. There would be music and dancing and special meals. One festival was called the Festival of Passover. During this festival, the people would remember how God helped them get away from the Egyptians and begin their journey to the promised land.
Another festival was called the Festival of Weeks. For this festival, Moses told the people to stop their work and rest. Moses told the people: “Remember how God has blessed you and made your crops grow. Thank Him for caring for you.” At the festival, the people ate together and invited poor people to join them.
The Festival of Shelters was another important time to celebrate God’s goodness. For seven days, God’s people would celebrate the times when God took care of them and gave them shelter. First, each family would build a tent to live in during the festival. These tents would help the people remember how God took care of the people all the time they lived in tents on their long journey. When the people obeyed God and celebrated God at the special festivals, God would be pleased. “God will bless you in all your crops and in all your work. You will have great joy!” said Moses.
