Passage: Exodus 13:17-14:31
The Israelites had lived in the land of Egypt a long time and
been Pharaoh’s slaves. But one day, Moses told the people it was
time to leave Egypt.
Moses told the people God would go ahead of the people and
show them which direction to travel. In the daytime, the people
would see a pillar of cloud in front of them. At night, the people
would see a pillar of fire. The cloud and the fire would always be in
front of the people to guide them.
God told Moses and the Israelites to travel toward the sea. On
the way, the people camped at the edge of the wilderness. God
told the people to go a different way to confuse the Egyptians.
Pharaoh decided he did not want the Israelites to leave and
stop being his slaves. Pharaoh sent his soldiers to find the people
and bring them back to Egypt. Pharaoh’s soldiers discovered the
Israelites camping by the sea.
When the Israelites saw Pharaoh’s army coming after them, the
people were terrified! They went to Moses and cried out to God to
help them.
Moses told the people to stand strong and not be afraid. God
would fight for them and rescue them from Pharaoh’s army.
And that is what God did! God pushed back the water in the sea
so the Israelites could walk to the other side on dry ground. When
everyone was safely across, God caused the waters to flow back
into the sea. Pharaoh’s army drowned in the water, and God’s
people were safe.
God had rescued the people! The Israelites saw God’s great
power and believed in Him.
