Israel's First King
May 24, 2026
Passage: 1 Samuel 8:1-10:27
Many people went to see Samuel the priest. The people told Samuel he was too old to lead them anymore. The people wanted a king. People in other lands had kings to lead them. Samuel thought about this. He knew God would not be pleased. Samuel knew God wanted the people to trust God and love Him. God had always led the people. God helped the people. Samuel prayed to God about this. God told Samuel to listen to the people. “The people have forgotten how I helped them,” God said. “They are choosing to follow other people and worship things, not Me. They do not want to trust Me. I will let them have a king, but they will not be happy.” Samuel talked to the people and told them what God said. But the people still wanted a king, a man, to lead them. Samuel said, “Go back to your city.” Then God told Samuel what to do to find the person who would become the people’s king. “I will send you a man who will save the people and rule over them,” God said. Samuel followed God’s instructions. God showed Samuel a man named Saul whom God had chosen to become king. Then Samuel called all the people together. Samuel said, “Do you see this man? He is the one God has chosen to be your king.”
