Passage: Exodus 14:1-31
The Hebrews had lived in the land of Egypt a long time as Pharaoh’s slaves. But one day, Moses told the people it was time to leave Egypt. Moses told the people God would go ahead of the people and show them which direction to travel. In the daytime, the people would see a pillar of cloud in front of them. At night, the people would see a pillar of fire. The cloud and the fire would always be in front of the people to guide them. God told Moses and the Hebrews to travel toward the sea. On the way, the people camped at the edge of the wilderness. God did not want the people to change their minds, so God told Moses to lead the people a different way around the sea along the road of the wilderness. Pharaoh decided he did not want the Hebrews to leave and stop being his slaves. Pharaoh sent his soldiers to find the people and bring them back to Egypt. The soldiers discovered the Hebrews camping by the sea. When the Hebrews saw Pharaoh’s army coming after them, the people were terrified! They went to Moses and cried out to God to help them. Moses told the people to stand strong and not be afraid. God would fight for them and rescue them from Pharaoh’s army. And that is what God did! God pushed back the water in the sea so the Hebrews could walk on dry ground to the other side. When everyone was safely across, God caused the waters to flow back into the sea. Pharaoh’s army drowned in the water, and God’s people were safe. God had rescued His people! The Israelites saw God’s great power and strength.
