The Lord of the Sabbath
January 12, 2025
It was the Sabbath, the day of rest. Jesus and His disciples
were walking through some grainfields. The disciples were
hungry, so they began to pick and eat some of the grain.
Some Pharisees nearby saw the disciples eating. The Pharisees
went to Jesus and said, “Look! Your disciples are breaking God’s
law about the Sabbath, the day of rest. God’s law says no work is
allowed, and picking grain is work!”
Jesus wanted people to understand that He is the One who
decides what is right and wrong to do on the Sabbath, and on
other days, too.
After hearing what the Pharisees said, Jesus went to the
synagogue. He saw a man with a shriveled hand. Jesus truly cared
about the man. Jesus healed the man’s hand. Jesus said to the
people watching, “If your sheep was stuck in a hole, you would
help the sheep, wouldn’t you? Healing this man is more important
than helping the sheep!”
The Pharisees were even angrier after this! Every time they saw
Jesus heal someone on the Sabbath day, they complained. The
Pharisees kept on watching Jesus to see what He would do and
say to the people.
Jesus helped people understand that it is important to do what
is good and be kind to others.
