The Pool of Bethesda
August 24, 2025
Passage: John 5:1-18
Jesus and His disciples went to Jerusalem and passed by
a pool near the Sheep Gate. Jerusalem was busy with people
gathering for the upcoming festival. Many sick people were at the
public pool hoping the waters of the pool would make them well.
One man at the pool that day had been unwell for a very long
time. He could not walk, and people had to help him get around.
When Jesus walked toward the pool, He saw the man. Jesus cared
about the man. Jesus knew the man had been coming to the pool
day after day and he still had not been healed.
“Do you want to get well?” Jesus asked the man.
“Sir, no one will help me get into the water,” the sick man said.
“Get up,” Jesus said. “Pick up your mat and walk.”
Immediately, the man was well. He picked up his mat and
started to walk.
Synagogue leaders were watching. They were angry that the
man picked up his mat. The leaders said the man was working on
the Sabbath day, and that was not allowed. The leaders asked the
man who made him well.
The man didn’t know who Jesus was or that He healed people.
The man just answered, “The man who made me well said to pick
up my mat and walk.”
Later, Jesus saw the healed man in the temple. “You are well
now,” Jesus said.
Then the man hurried to tell the synagogue leaders that it was
Jesus who had made him well.
