The Parable of the Talents
January 26, 2025
Passage: Matthew 25:14-30
One day when Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives,
Jesus’ disciples asked many questions. The disciples wanted to
understand what things would happen to Jesus. They knew that
one day Jesus would go back to heaven to be with God.
Jesus wanted to help the disciples know that they should
continue to do Jesus’ work and do it well. Jesus wanted the men to
know how to please God and use their talents to help more people
learn about Jesus.
Jesus told a story about a man, a master, who went on a trip.
The man gave each of his servants some money to use while he
was gone. (In Bible times, money was called talents.) The man
would receive the money back when he returned.
One of the men used his money to make more money. This
pleased the master.
The second man used his money to make more money, too. This
also pleased the master.
The third man did not use his money to make more money. He
just buried the money so it would not get lost or taken.
The master was not pleased at all that the third man did not use
his money wisely. The servant had not been wise.
Jesus told this story to help the disciples know that Jesus is the
master and people should do their very best to use their talents
and time to work for Jesus.
